Part 36: Fourth Tour

Italy up and down. In the meantime we were here so often that the view for the small pretty trivialities almost got lost. We lived with and belonged to it and yet not. At least I don’t. I felt the constraints that a daughter-in-law could get into, and yet I remained a guest, because that’s what I was, and still tried to help out a little with the grandparents and yet not feel too involved. Milla had suddenly woken up in the last few weeks. In the baby’s face there was suddenly a human being to be discovered, with wishes behind the grasping hands. Preferably it was spoon, cup, napkin. She began to play and understand her environment and enjoyed people. Milla so with Nonno and Nonna and that was my contribution. I also let go at times and the child a part of his family I barely knew and tried to fill my empty hands with a little sleep, mental idleness and exercise. And as long as Milla returned with beaming eyes, I managed quite well. We continued south, two weeks in an old monastery. Gianni was working and I was lying in the shade. Milla between many hands, in the paddling pool and more and more on her own feet, she developed quite great in these days. Then on again. This time Ventotene, followed by Naples, then back to Florence, to Elba, back to Florence, with friends to Liguria, back to Florence and then all the way back, to Berlin. And now it was just as well. Two months later. That was a real summer. Time for autumn.

This was advantageous, even so we reached tropically humid 30 degrees, which immediately put a damp film on the skin when we first stepped out of the air-conditioned airport. It was dark when we arrived, neon signs with Chinese characters on the side of the road,…

One of Gianni’s good friends, Paul White, once said: everyone should have a friend like Gianni. I don’t think there’s anything to add to that. Everyone should have a friend like Gianni! I thank Gianni Bettucci. And to my parents of course! What would I be without them? And to my friends who always have…

Wait. Test. Negative. This cannot be. Test again and again and just wait a few more days. And then the certainty and the shock. How can that be? Fucking shit! Two weeks again smoking and drinking and dancing and then again and meanwhile less exciting. Shall we go for a coffee? Good. An hour later,…

Since my daughter’s father has a new boyfriend, that’s nice for him. And I am happy with him. Of course. I like him. Of course, I’m a little envious. But yes, sure, I’m happy with him. That’s the way it should be and I really try hard. My being alone is not bad. Often enough…
